WWII Provenance Project
Provenance:
By 1934, E. & A. Silberman Galleries (Vienna); by 1939, Merle J. Trees (Chicago, 1883-1954), by purchase from Silberman Galleries (Vienna or New York) [1]; 1939, University of Illinois, by gift from Merle J. and Emily N. Trees.
Notes:
[1] E. & A. Silberman Galleries exported many artworks from its Vienna headquarters to its New York branch in the 1930s. The New York branch served as Trees’s principle art dealer in the 1930s and 1940s. It is likely that Silberman Galleries transferred this painting from its Vienna inventory to its New York inventory before selling it to Trees.
