Description
Broadside from the Princely Almanac (Princelicke Almanach) with an allegorical depiction of the marriage of William of Orange and Princess Mary Stuart (later William III and Mary II). At center, William dressed as a Caesar and Mary stand on an altar, upon which snakes are being burned, attended by the Dutch Maid. On the left is a medallion with an orange tree and the arms of the Houses of Orange and Stuart. To the right, a Catholic bishop snarls and a woman holding a Gallic rooster puts her hand to her head in despair. Underneath is an inset scene of the private marriage ceremony in the apartments of St James's Palace.
