Description
Satire on the alliance between the deposed King James II and Louis XIV of France and their attempt to take Ireland. James II, wearing a pilgrim's hat, says farewell to his wife as Louis XIV fills James's purse. Behind them is Father Petre (James II's confessor), carrying James II's son. James II and Louis XIV joined forces and landed in Ireland in 1689 in an attempt to re-take the throne, however, William III ultimately defeated them in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The letterpress key on the verso labels various elements in the image.
