WWII Provenance Project
Provenance:
By 1806 or 1807, Habsburg imperial collections (Ambras Castle, Innsbruck); around 1897, Kunsthistoriches Museum (Vienna), by transfer from the imperial collections; 1937, Kunsthandel P. de Boer (Amsterdam) (dealer), by trade with the Kunsthistoriches Museum [1]; by 1940, E. &. A. Silberman Galleries (New York); August 1940, Billy Rose (New York, 1899–1966), by purchase from E. &. A. Silberman Galleries; by 1943, E. &. A. Silberman Galleries (New York) [2]; 1943, Merle J. Trees (Chicago, 1883–1954), by purchase from E. &. A. Silberman Galleries; 20 December 1943, University of Illinois, by gift from Merle J. and Emily N. Trees.

Notes:
[1] In 1937, the Kunsthistoriches Museum deaccessioned 5 paintings to Kunsthandel P. de Boer, including this painting. Dr. Robert Herzig of the Galerie Sanct Lucas (Vienna) took custody of the paintings on behalf of P. de Boer Gallery.
[2] It is likely Billy Rose sold or traded the painting back to Silberman Galleries, from whom he had acquired it in 1940.
