WWII Provenance Project
Provenance:
Before 1953, E. & A. Silberman Galleries (New York) [1]. Before 1953, Merle J. Trees (Chicago, 1883–1954); 1953, University of Illinois, by gift from Merle J. and Emily N. Trees.

Notes:
[1] There are two known copies of this painting: a watercolor by the Dutch artist Cornelis van Noorde dating from the 18th century, currently in the possession of the Haarlem archives in the Netherlands; and an oil copy of the watercolor by an unknown painter from an unspecified date. The provenance of all three paintings has been muddled for some time in historical catalogues and books.
